Embedding Generative AI into Education is a emerging area for business ethicists. It asks fundamental questions about our perceptions of the interactions of people with evolving generative tech-centric systems.

In our Education SIG session, and following Rawls’s ‘Veil of Ignorance’ framework, we pondered how we can use AI as a ‘Friendly’ University Education tool to create a ‘fair and just’ learning environment for all.

With limited time, there were lots of unanswered questions, Prof Moran Luck from Charles Sturt, challenged us to the following:

  1. If the AI knows what approach is best for a student’s learning, then would it be right for it to insist on this approach (even if they wanted to do it another way)?
  2. Should we program the AI to teach students in their preferred way (which maybe a sub-optimal way)?
  3. Would an AI that has our best interests in mind, allow a student to learn in a way which isn’t in their best interests?
