Trinity College

The Trinity/Gourlay Prize is an annual sum of AU$10,000  awarded to academics and professionals in the field of Business Ethics.

ABEN is delighted to partner with Trinity College at the University of Melbourne to deliver an ongoing funding program to create teaching resources that support the practical application of Business Ethics and closely related fields.

Background

The Trinity/Gourlay Prize is made possible by way of endowment established in the College by John W. Gourlay and his family to promote ethical behaviour in business.

In 2004 John and Louise Gourlay provided a $2.5 million endowment to Trinity College to establish the Gourlay Visiting Professor of Ethics in Business initiative. The endowment was generated by a belief that the exercise of uncompromising integrity and morality is not only intrinsically desirable but also delivers improved and more certain business outcomes.

In recognition of the pioneering efforts of ABEN to integrate ethics into business education in Australia, Trinity College chose to collaborate with ABEN to fund research that supports education of business ethics.

Aim of Prize

The aim of the Trinity/Gourlay Prize is to support the development of an evidence-based teaching resource that is focused on ethical issues in business.

The prize money must be used to make an educational teaching resource (e.g. case study, interactive scenario simulations etc.).

The educational teaching resource will be presented at the subsequent ABEN conference and will be shared via ABEN’s website, subject to copyright restrictions of the publishers of such output and intellectual property rights of the authors.

The educational teaching resources created using the funding provided by this program will be shared for use in academic courses and professional development programs.

Overview of the Process

  • Applying for the Trinity/Gourlay Prize

Develop your application using the attached template file (click word icon below) and include details about your idea such as a title, aims and objectives, intended audience, project description, intended outcomes, timeline/milestones and budget. Applicants submit their teaching resource proposal to the ABEN committee via email.

  • Awarding the Prize

The judging panel will include members from the ABEN Committee and a representative of Trinity College, such as the Gourlay Fellow in Business Ethics. • If shortlisted, you will be invited to give a 10-15min presentation at the ABEN annual conference (held in November or December each year at a different city in Australasia). • The shortlisted finalist(s) presentation and discussion is designed as a collaborative, non-competitive exchange of ideas on business ethics education, and is not a pitch or assessment forum for the prize.

  • Creating the teaching resource

With the awarded funds, the Recipient(s) will create the teaching resource (i.e., tools/ materials) within 12 months. The prize money must be used to produce an educational teaching resource. For example, a case study for classroom teaching, a video, a game, or a TED Talk. You are encouraged to be creative in your design and delivery- with a focus on making the teaching resource relevant and useful.

  • Knowledge-sharing and dissemination

The teaching resource will be disseminated freely for use by academics and professionals. The Recipient(s) of the Trinity/Gourlay prize will share their teaching resource, in two ways •Presentation at the subsequent ABEN conference and •A user-friendly format to be shared via ABEN’s website.
